How can I get involved in the LHS community?
The LHS/PTSA offers several avenues for involvement. Parent volunteers work in the Main Office and the student library, help with Newsletter and other mailings, and organize and publish the student directory. The hospitality committee provides refreshments at meetings and hosts teacher appreciation events. The All-Night Graduation Party is a huge effort, ultimately involving over 100 people in various jobs. The PTSA publishes the LHS Newsletter and hosts about seven Principal’s Forums during the school year. These forums with Principal Natalie Cohen are centered around topics of interest to parents.

Check the Newsletter for events listed in the calendar. Those appearing in bold face print are mostly events which all parents might wish to attend with or without their students.

The Friends of Lexington Music, Art and Drama Students, Inc. (FOLMADS) was founded several years ago to support students K-12 in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. LHS parents will receive a mailing with a volunteer sheet that asks for help in ushering, organizing, fund raising, etc. Every year parents perform hundreds of these jobs, each one relatively small, but adding up to a substantial support system for the Department. Call Coordinator Walter Pavasaris (861-2320, ext. 2175) for information.

The Lexington Athletic Association is another townwide group formed as a booster club for all middle and high school sports. It runs several fundraising events, such as an annual golf tournament, and oversees the Lexington Athletic Hall of Fame. Many sports have individual booster clubs which exist at the discretion of the coach involved. Call Athletic Director Tony Porter (861-2320, ext.1022 or 1023) for more information.

The Debate program has a parent support group (BOLD, Backers of Lexington Debate), and parents also volunteer for individual jobs, such as working with the math club.
Parent representatives serve on the School Council which meets once a month in the evenings. (All meetings are open to the public.)

All of these groups provide excellent opportunities to participate in the school community and to keep informed about the school’s activities. The very best way to learn about and become involved in the LHS community is to attend various events such as the PTSA/Principal’s forums, concerts, plays, the science fair and athletic events, etc. Even if your student is not involved in a particular program, by attending an event such as the fall musical, a concert or an athletic event, you become a member of the community. It goes without saying that if your student is participating in an event, your presence tells your student you care and are interested, and you have the advantage of learning more about your child’s life at LHS.

Once you begin to get a feel for LHS, you will know better where you might like to make a contribution that will satisfy you and help the LHS community. See also the Lexington High School Parent/School Communication Guide which is attached to the September newsletter.
