With the constant publicity being given to the obesity epidemic that affects American society and children in particular, physical acivity in the school system is the cornerstone around which active lifestyle choices are made by the individual in their community. In a recent discussion by PE4Life, the benefits of an effective school were discussed. *Establish a positive and safe learning environment for all students. *Teach a variety of physical activities that make physical education classes fun and enjoyable *Create maximum opportunities for students to be successful. *Promote student honesty, integrity and good sportsmanship. *Guide students into becoming skilful and confident movers. *Facilitate the development and maintenance of physical fitness. *Assist students in setting and achieving personal goals. *Provide specific, constructive feedback to help students master motor skills. *Afford opportunities for students to succeed in cooperative and competitive situations. *Prepare and encourage students to practice skills and be active for a lifetime. What are the Benefits of Quality Physical Education? (posted by Tony Porter on Tue Feb 1 17:09:27 2005)
This article is taken from the Massachusetts Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Newsletter, Volume X, No. 3, January, 2005, page 23. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF QUALITY PHYSICAL EDUCATION? Quality Physical Education (PE) programs are not the "gym" classes of the past. Quality PE programs are needed to allow students develop into healthy active adults. Benefits include: IMPROVED PHYSICAL FITNESS; Improves children's muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, body composition and cardiovascular endurance. SKILL DEVELOPMENT; Develops motor skills, which allow for safe, successful and satisfying participation in physical activities. SUPPORT OF OTHER SUBJECT AREAS; Reinforces knowledge learned across the curriculum by serving as a lab for application of content in science, math and social studies. SELF DISCIPLINE; Facilitates development of student responsibility for health and fitness. IMPROVED JUDGEMENT; Quality physical education can influence moral development. Students have the opportunity to assume leadership, cooperate with others, question actions and regulations and accept responsibility for their own behavior. STRESS REDUCTION; Physical activity becomes an outlet for releasing tension and anxiety, and facilitates emotional stability and resilience. STRENGTHENED PEER RELATIONSHIPS; Physical education can be a major force in helping socialize with others successfully and provides opportunities to learn positive people skills. Especially during late childhood and adolescence, being able to participate in dances, games, and sports is an important part of peer culture. IMPROVED SELF-CONFIDENJCE AND SELF-ESTEEM; Physical education instills a stronger sense of self-worth in children based on their mastery of skills and concepts in physical activity. They can become more confident, assertive, independent and self-controlled. EXPERIENCE SETTING GOALS; Gives children the opportunity to set and strive for personal, achievable goals. *From Press Release

Physical Education News (posted by Harrington PE Staff on Tue Nov 23 14:58:04 2004)
Information thanks to Jane Franks RN,BSN,MBA School Health Services LAWMAKERS TO TARGET OBESITY BY BIDDING TO BOOST PHYSICAL EDUCATION A bill being introduced by lawmakers concerned about a growing obesity epidemic among children and sponsored by Sen. Thomas McGee (D-Lynn) and Rep. Stephen LeDuc (D-Marlborough), co-chairmen of the Legislature's Children's Caucus, would require all Massachusetts school children to participate in a state-mandated amount of physical education classes. All elementary school students would be required to participate in at least two and a half hours of physical education a week and require all middle and high school students to exercise three hours and 45 minutes per school week.Under the bill, there would be "no substitution of other instruction or activities for physical education," and all courses would be regulated by the National Association for Sport & Physical Education. A 2001 Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey by the state Department of Education found that in an average week, one third of students did not participate in physical education class, and that as students advanced through the grades, their activity level decreased. Current state law requires all students to take part in some form of physical education, which may include, "calisthenics, gymnastics and military drill," but allows local school officials to set the minimum mandatory hours. The state was responsible for determining the number of required hours until 1996, when the state Board of Higher Education repealed the section to give school officials the authority to determine the required physical education hours, as they do for all other course work. According to the proposed bill's preamble, childhood obesity has increased 300 percent in the last 30 years, "leading to a dramatic increase in the incidence of heart disease, type II diabetes, and other obesity related diseases among today's children and adolescents." Gov. Mitt Romney recently also targeted what he called "a crisis with America's health." Romney swore in a 30-member Physical Fitness and Sports Committee, a team of fitness, pro sports, marketing and medical professionals who will work to increase physical activity in young state residents. The committee is charged with creating an outreach initiative to encourage children to participate in sports and physical fitness activities, and was asked to launch a public awareness campaign to enhance participation in sport and physical fitness. The committee will present their first action plan to Romney by Feb. 15,2005.
