Mrs. Jerusha Vogel - Latoya Julce ’03

Shadowing Latoya Julce was a great experience. First of all, I had the chance to get to know a wonderful young lady better than I ever could in just the classroom setting. I wish I could have done this with all my students. I also really enjoyed the opportunity to meet so many of my collegues and see different teaching styles. Through my observations I got some ideas on ways that I could improve my own teaching . Although I remember being a student, it was good for me to experience again the jolt to the system one has when changing subjects so often. I went from crying over Death of A Salesman in English to learning Algebra 5 minutes later - and it took a few more minutes than that to switch gears. I really liked talking with Latoya's friends at lunch. They shared what it

was like to be a METCO student in Lexington and shared what they liked and didn't like about school. Overall, they seem pretty happy here.

It was also great having Latoya shadow me. She spent the night at my house the night before so she could have the benefit of sleeping in. She spent several hours that night doing homework and saw me doing the same. That day, she helped me in my classes and ate lunch in my office while we worked. We had several interesting conversations about conceptions versus reality and I feel that it was a very rewarding experience for both.
