COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The focus of this course is on understanding the concepts of calculus from a geometric or intuitive point of view. Units from differential and integral calculus provide the main themes, but time will be taken to master topics not adequately studied in pre-calculus. Practical applications will be emphasized rather than theoretical aspects. This course is not intended as preparation for the Advanced Placement Calculus exam. While some students may be eligible for advanced standing in college calculus, all students will be thoroughly prepared for a beginning college calculus course.

LEVEL DESCRIPTION:
Level 1 courses progress at a fast pace. Students are expected to have developed most of the skills and understood most of the concepts covered in prior courses, but the course will include some review of difficult topics that may not have been fully retained. Mathematical concepts are introduced using a balance of abstract and concrete approaches. New ideas are often developed through student investigation with moderate guidance from the teacher. Students will be expected to solve routine problems independently and solve open-ended and non-routine problems with teacher support. Students will be expected to use the textbook as a resource and occasionally to learn new material independently. Typical classes include some review of homework and previously covered content before new material is introduced. Students are expected to be self-motivated, taking responsibility for their own learning and seeking help when needed. The course is designed to meet the needs of a student who thrives in a guided learning environment.

HOMEWORK:

Homework is a tool for practicing. It is your responsibility to do the homework assignment every night. Most of the answers are in the back of the book. You should check your answers before coming to class. I will answer any questions that you have the following day. Homework will be checked on random days.  Each homework check will be worth 4 points based on the following rubric.

4 points
3 points
2 points
1 point
0 points
All problems attempted and work shown completely

More than half of the problems attempted and work shown completely

Half of the problems attempted with most work shown Less than half of the problems attempted or most work not shown No problems attempted

QUIZZES:

Quizzes will be given periodically.  Most quizzes will be very short and the number of possible points will usually range from 20 – 50 points depending on the length of the quiz.

TESTS:

Tests will be given after each major unit has been completed. They will consist of all material covered in the unit.  Tests will be worth approximately 60 – 80 points.

QUARTER GRADE: The quarter grade will be calculated by adding up all of the grades and dividing the total by the total possible points.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:

If you have an unexcused absence on the day when a test or a quiz is given, you will not be permitted to make-up the test or quiz and will receive a '0' for that test or quiz.

EXCUSED ABSENCES:

SCHOOL RELATED ABSENCES:

If you are going to be absent due to a school related activity (i.e. field trip), you are required to find out your homework assignment or take a planned quiz BEFORE you leave for the event.

TARDIES:

It is important that you get to class on time.  We will start immediately.  If you are tardy, I will be following the LHS Attendance Policy.

FOOD/DRINKS:

You will not be permitted to eat  in my classroom. This includes candy. You may chew gum as long as I don't see it or hear it. If I see it or hear it, you will immediately be asked to put it in the trash can.  You may drink water, but nothing else.

TEACHER ABSENCE:

At no time should you dismiss yourself from class. If I am late, you are to remain in your seats quietly. After 10 minutes, one student should go to the Ms. DeFeudis'  Office and inquire about the class. Class may only be dismissed by another teacher or dean.

EXTRA HELP:

I am available for extra help after school from 2:30 - 3:00 every day.. Find me in the Math Building Staff Room (Room 713). I am also available most of my free blocks during the day. Check my schedule by the door to find out my free blocks.   If you need help during those blocks, you should make an appointment with me. Since I am part-time, I am NOT available before school, X-block or during the first block of the day.

MAKEUP TESTS :

All makeup tests will either be taken with me in room 713 after school or in Room 820 during school hours. If there is not a teacher in Room 820, either find me in one of my classrooms (802 or 824) or ask a teacher in the staff room if they can get the test or quiz for you. It is your responsibility to make-up tests in a reasonable amount of time.
