Derivatives of Inverses

Section 3.8 is about the derivatives of inverses in general
and the inverses of trig functions in particular.

CW p.162-163/22, 34, 35 (finish for homework)
HW p.162-163/5-19 odd, 20, 21, 33

The quizzes are graded and will be returned on Thursday.
Right now my own recommendation is that you vote to have
the test on Monday the 13th because there is a problem on
the quiz that most of you need more review on.  You'll see.

Implicit Differentiation

We finished up the Chain Rule by looking at p.148/64, 66.  Make
sure you understand these problems and their solutions.

Implicit differentiation is a convenient way of taking derivatives
when you cannot "solve for y".  We will be spending a few days on
this to make sure you understand it and are past the common mistakes.

10/24  Intro to Implicit Differentiation (section 3.7)
             HW p.155/1-21 odd, 39-45 odd

10/26  Tangents, Normals and Higher-Order Derivativess.
             HW p.155-157/24-36 by 3's, 42, 46, 48, 50, 51

10/27  Proof of the Power Rule for Rational Exponents
             HW Differentiation Techniques Worksheet

10/30  Quiz on 3.5-3.7
             HW read p.157-158/Exploration 1

Proposed Syllabus for the rest of the term:

10/31  Derivatives of Inverse Trig Functions. (3.8)
11/02  Review Exp and Log Functions (1.3 and 1.5)
11/03  Derivatives of Exp Functions (3.9)
11/06  Derivatives of Log Functions (3.9)
11/07  No school - Professional Development Day (Election Day too)
11/09  Extension Problems from Chapter 3
11/10  Test of Chapter 3 (and end of Term 1)

There will also be a Problem Set that you will have at least a week to complete.

The Chain Rule

Section 3.6 deals with the Chain Rule.  Given that we have the
Sum and Difference Rules, the Product Rule, the Quotient Rule, etc.,
this should more properly be called the Composition Rule - how do
you take the derivative of nested functions?

10/20  HW p.146-147/1-31 odd

10/23  HW p.147-149/33-45 odd, 50, 52, 57, 58, 61, 62, 67
             and finish worksheet from class

Derivatives of the Trig Functions

Following our review of Trig Functions we now move to finding
the derivatives of them.

10/17  HW p.140/1-23 odd
10/19  CW p.140/25;   HW p.140-141/26-29, 31-36

Our next quiz, on 3.5-3.7, is likely to be on Monday, October 30th.
