Optimization

Before Thanksgiving we looked at ways to find maxima and
minima using Calculus.  Now we are going to use the maxima
and minima to solve problems.  This is Optimization.

Beginning to look at applications

We are starting Chapter 4 (Applications of the Derivative).
This chapter has some pretty fun stuff in it.  The first order
of business (section 4.1) really focusses on vocabulary.

CW p.184-185/1-9 odd, 32, 33, 35, 53

HW p.184-185/12-30 by 3's, 36-42 by 3's, 45-49, 51

Reviewing Parametrics, Vectors, Exp and Log Functions

After a quick review of parametrics and their close relative, the vector,
to correct some misunderstandings evident on the last quiz, we had a
lightning review of exponential and logarithmic functions.

HW p.25-26/36, 40, 41  and  p.39-40/11, 15, 18, 20, 37-47 odd, 52

We decided to have the Chapter 3 Test (Derivatives) on Monday, 11/13/06.
We will review, learn section 3.9 (derivatives of exponential and log functions),
reivew some more (and pass in Problem Set #1) by the end of the term.
