The limits of Chapter 8

Chapter 8 is about limits, the relative rate of change for two functions when we evaluate them as they go towards the same limit and limits of integrals that involve infinity in some way.  Do your homework!!!

1/16  8.1  Intro to L'Hopital's Rule
               HW p.423-425/1-21 all (skip 3, 7, 13), 45, 47, 50-52

1/17  8.1  More Indeterminate forms for L'Hopital's Rule
               HW p.423-425/3, 7, 13, 23-41 odd, 42, 48, 49

1/18  8.3   Improper Integrals (horizontally infinite)
                HW p.442-443/1,4,7,12-14,17,18,20,21,23-25,47,48,52,53

1/22  8.3  Improper Integrals (vertically infinite and direct comparison)
               HW p.442-443/rest of 1-26, 33, 37, 43, 54, 58

1/23  8.3  Comparison Tests (limit comparison, order of growth)
               HW p.442-443/27-46 all, 50

1/24  8.4  Integral Tables and Trig Substitution
               HW p.452-453/31, 32, 35-41 odd, 43-46
(Note:  If either substitution or the table of integrals can be used, try both)

1/25  Review

1/29  Ch 8 Test (not 8.2)
HW p.520-526/read review of vectors in the plane (except ex. 6)

Finishing Chapter 7

The last bit of the chapter before the test deals with arc length and surface area.  There will be a little probability homework after the test.

1/09  7.4 Length of Curves  HW p.399-400/1-21 odd, 22, 23, 26, 28, 29
1/10  Surface Area of Solids (Half Day: C G H F) HW finish worksheet
1/11  Review problems including AP problem with perimeter
1/15  Ch 7 Test
           HW read Normal Probability p.404-407
           do p.410/27-30;  p.415/42,43

The proposed syllabus is to do Chapter 8 for the rest of January,
do Chapter 10 in February and then have the unbroken stretch of
March and half of April to devote to Chapter 9.

Volume of Solids

We will be using Calculus to find the volume of solids.  This is important for everything from symmetric things like bundt pans to asymmetric things like architecture to irregular things like human organs.  There are three methods: Discs, Washers, and Shells. We luxuriate by spending three days on the topic.

1/03  p.390-392/1-16
1/04  p.392-393/17-33 odd, 39-43
1/08  p.392-394/28-34 even, 35 (with shells), 37, 51-53, 55-68
