Our last topic: Trigonometry

We have one more topic before we start reviewing for the final: Trigonometry. It is a topic that makes use of the fact that all similar triangles have the same angles.  We will be dealing with right triangles most of the time so the Special Right Triangles, the Pythagorean Theorem, and radicals will be important.

This unit is all worksheet based so all of the homework is to do/finish the worksheet

5/19  Radical Practice
5/20  No class do to schedule shift for MCAS
5/21  Math MCAS Day 1, class at 10:25am, Right Triangle Practice
5/22  Math MCAS Day 2, no class
5/23  US Hist. MCAS (juniors), class at 10:25am, Intro to Trigonometry

5/26  Memorial Day, no school
5/27  More practice plus finding angles using trig
5/28  More practice finding angles
5/30  Applications of trig (using it to solve word problems)

6/02  Trig Quiz

After this we will review for five class periods (including taking an old final).

Similarity

Our next topic is Similarity (things that have the same shape but different size). Most of the homework will be to finish the worksheet given in class (unless posted otherwise).

Given that MCAS is coming, we will move our weekly quizzes to Wednesdays and have MCAS Practice every Friday until the actual test.

4/28  Fraction Practice
4/29  Ratio and Proportion (notes and worksheet)
4/30  Intro to Similarity (notes and worksheet)
5/02  MCAS Practice

5/05  Similarity Practice
5/06  More complicated Similarity Practice
5/07  Similar Polygons
5/09  MCAS Practice

5/12  Special (similar) Right Triangles
5/13  More Practice
5/14  Similarity Quiz
5/16  MCAS Practice

We will have class three times during MCAS week where we will start learning trigonometry (our last topic). The Math MCAS for sophomores is on 5/21 and 5/22.  On Friday, 5/23 there will be a US History MCAS for Juniors.

Slight Change in Transformation Schedule

There is a slight change in the schedule.  On Tuesday, 4/08, instead of looking at Dilations, we will be working with isometries (really just another way to describe what we have been doing).  The homework will be a worksheet.

Transformation and Tessellations

For the next three weeks leading up to vacation, we will work with Transformations and Tessellations.  Transformations are ways of changing a figure by moving, reflecting, rotating, and dilating it. Tessellations are figures that "tile."  They fit together because of the transformations used to create them.

3/31  Intro to Transformations  HW finish worksheet
4/01  Computer Lab Intro (room 700)  HW finish lab
4/02  Translations  HW p.155-157/9-19,22-25,32,38,42-44,48
4/04  Quick Quiz, Reflections and Symmetry  HW p.286-8/8-19,21-31

4/07  Rotations  HW 11.8 Practice A Worksheet
4/08  Dilations   HW p.396-397/6-14
4/09  Mixed Transformations Practice  HW finish worksheet
4/11  Quick Quiz, start Tessellation Project

4/14  Work on Tessellation Project
4/15  Schindler's List In-School Field Trip (work on project if in class)
4/16  Present and pass in Tessellation Project
4/18  MFA Field Trip (Transformation in Art)

4/19-4/27  April Vacation

Net Project

This week during MCAS we will be working on a Net project. Be creative!  We will work on it in class but you may need to do some of the calculations and the decorating at home. Remember, it is due on Monday, March 31st.
