Transformations Part C

We looked at the 4 representations of transformations and the
relationship between transformations and composite functions.

The homework deals with Section 1-6, Modeling Functions.
It has a lot of calculator work. Read it over and see if you
have any questions for Friday.

Day 2 of Transformations

Today's second day of transformations focused on more
complex combinations of transformations. Know the order
of the transformations - it matters.

Demana Transformation Homework

We move back to the cream and blue book for another
look at the basic transformations.

Starting Transformations

After our fun Friday of testing on Function Description we move
into Function Manipulation. This is, of course, transformations.
The Brown book provides a good review of this topic so that is
where your homework comes from:

read pp. 139-142
do pp.143-144/5-10

Reviewing for the test on Friday

You have been given a bulleted list of ways to describe functions.
Know those. You are also responsible for anything else we talked
about in class or was written in the text (unless we explicitly
skipped it). Try the problems on the handout. Look at the old
tests linked on my web page. Understand all.

Homework Check

Make sure you have done all your homework and that you don't
leave it at home!

More ways of describing functions

We will be working our way through section 1-4 for a few days.
Here is the homework on the section:
p.122-125/1-19 odd, 33-51 odd, 57, 58, 66
There is also a worksheet on "salmon" colored paper.
Monday night you should do all the problems on combining functions
(algebraically and through composition) and any other ones that you can
figure out. Tuesday night is for finishing all of the problems - especially
the inverse ones.

Get ready for the test on Friday of 1-1 to 1-4 plus limits (10-3).

Ten Basic Functions + one!

Make sure you read the interesting facts about the ten basic
functions in section 1-3 and then see if you can find something
interesting about the logistic function (a better choice for a
basic function than the cosine function).

Problems in section 1-3 pp.105-107/3-36 by 3's, 41, 44, 45.
Remember to PROVE the three ideas in #41, not just make
conjectures.

If the notation for #45 is giving you trouble (all those f(y)'s)
then you may like to rewrite the questions with a's and b's.
For example, part would would become f(a+b) = f(a) + f(b).
Hopefully that will free your mind...

Limits from Section 10.3

Section 10.3 pp.781-782/1-21 odd, 23, 24, 35-43 odd

Watch the tutorial (www.calculus-help.com/funstuff/phobe.html)
for a more entertaining explanation of limits.

Function Vocab Part 1

Section 1-2 pp.96-97/1-11 odd, 14, 19 - 31 odd, 35-41 odd

We hurried through the vocabulary for some of this but give it
your best try. Remember that even functions are symmetric
around the y-axis (so f(-x) = f(x), like f(x) = x2) and odd
functions are symmetric around the origin (so f(-x) = -f(x),
like f(x) = x3). We don't have a name for curves that are
symmetric around the x-axis (like x = |y|) because they are
not functions.

Welcome to the D and E-Block Honors Advanced Math Blog

This will be one of the ways that your can find your homework this year.
We jumped right in on new ways of thinking about functions in Chapter 1.
Make sure you are comfortable with the prerequisites in Chapter P.
Please comment on how useful you think this blog will be.
