Recommendations for 2005-2006 Seniors
The initial procedure you should follow is to
simply ask me if I'd be willing to write a recommendation on your
behalf. If
I agree to write for you, rest assured that I feel I have something
positive to say. I send my recommendations directly to the
colleges and I require students to fill out (or check off) a
confidentiality agreement ensuring the integrity of the
recommendation. If you have a question
about this,
I'd be happy to explain my reasoning fully.
Here is an outline of
how my writing process works:
Soon after classes resume in the fall, I will need to receive the
following practical information from you. Please do not tarry in
getting this information to me. If I feel that I will not have adequate
time to responsibly contemplate and write a recommendation, I may have
to refuse your request. Please
do not put me in this situation.
- A list of colleges to which you will be applying, complete with
application deadlines.
- Stamped, addressed (with return address too!) envelopes for each
recommendation you want me
to send.
- Any forms that might be required by the colleges.
- A signed confidentiality agreement (if the colleges admission
form does not have one).
I would also like some additional background information about you
and your interests. I feel that I can accurately speak to both your
mathematical abilities and your more general academic merits, and to
these areas I will make a majority of my comments. Extra background
information can help
to round-out your recommendation and to tailor it to meet whatever
individual goals you may have. With this in mind, please plan on
meeting with me and discussing
the following.
1. What selection criteria did you use when choosing
your schools?
2. In what extra-curricular activities are you /
have you been involved?
3. What subjects do you indend to study in
college? Why? What experience do you have with this subject (ex:
classes, summer research, independent
interest)?
The sooner you can get this information to me the better, especially if
you plan on applying early action/decision to any schools. If you have
any questions,
don't hesitate to ask. Over the summer I can be reached at the usual
school
address, tkresser@sch.ci.lexington.ma.us
