V. Open Comments:

1) Senate is not particularly welcoming. The language we use, the unique conduct all serve to detach us from the public. Perhaps there is a way that we could make the body more open during Senate day, like discussing mock legislation, or opening the floor to questions

VI. Committee Reports:

1) Climate met to discuss the apparel for Valentine's Day quartets

2) Policy met to discuss sophomore open campus

VII. New Business:

1) Motion to be in informal discussion about Valentine's Day apparel

2) Motion passed

Informal Discussion

a. This bill will get written, but we need a rationale

b. The concert attire requirement is disgruntling students

c. Can't the students involved just use some closely monitored common sense?

d. Apparently another portion is that only upperclassmen can be directly

performed for

e. We should try to make this bill as Jones-Friendly as possible

f. Maybe allow some creativity, but maintain scruples

g. Back in fall there were concerns about these procedures. Lots of divergence of opinion in faculty, as no one wants to be the bad guy, but things have gotten out of hand, and teachers have the right to maintain control of their classrooms

h. Many of these restrictions seem unnecessary. Their should be an opt out possibility, rather than opt in

i. The singers pushed the envelope on their outfits

j. There was a costume approval process, but loopholes were often exploited

k. It was either reform the system, or get rid of it. Let's face it, this wasn't about creative costumes, it was about slutwear.

l. The problem with this decision was that students felt shut out

m. We should do something just to show that Senate has a voice, perhaps a resolution would be appropriate

n. No, it would operate better as a bill. An uproar is better in the long run. This concert dress is funeral wear, requiring tuxes is a step to far. What if people who show up in unsavory costumes lose their spots

Text of Library Pass bill, passed 1-03-07 (39 in favor, 2 opposed, 0 abstentions)

Students without open campus who wish to go to the Library during a study hall will no longer need to obtain a signature from their study hall teachers on their library passes.   Therefore, all students with library passes may proceed directly to the library at the beginning of the block.   Students without open campus will still be required to bring their signed passes back to their study hall teachers before the block ends.

Rationale:

•  While students may arrive on time to study, it is not uncommon for teachers who are traveling from different buildings to be upwards of ten minutes late.   Requiring students to have their passes signed by their study hall teachers and to return before the block ends often results in students having less than thirty minutes to work in the library.

•  A study hall teacher's signature on the library pass is unnecessary due to the fact that if the student does not have a study, yet goes to the library, he or she will be penalized with an unexcused absence in their scheduled class.

Because timestamps on library passes show time of entrance and exit, study hall teachers can easily see if the student spent the time that they were not in the study hall in the library.   Secretaries will also be able to easily assess whether students spent the full block in the library or if there is time that is unaccounted for. ts
