5) Thank you elections committee. Elections went smoothly.
VII. Community Service
1) Resolution #3 is unclear on the nature of the ad hoc committee that
will be created.
2) We intentionally left that vague because we do not want to exclude
people such as administrators and the community from joining the
discussion.
3) Motion to bring Community Service Resolution to the table passes.
4) On the community service proposals, Dr. Jones said no to #1, raised
concerns about 990 hours for #2, was in favor of #3, #4, and was in
favor of #5 but didn't know whether it was in the purview of Senate.
He recommended we take this in a slow and democratic manner. We
developed this resolution from various sources. We hope for a
unanimous vote on the issue of community service.
5) Friendly amendment to replace "on" with "with" to correct the grammar passes.
6) Concerns raised about the 3rd paragraph from the bottom.
7) Point of that part is to get people out of their "comfort" zones.
For example, keeping score during a score is not a community service.
8) There should be some kind of a range or balance. We shouldn't
define what other people's comfort zones are. Trying to overly control
becomes a nightmare.
9) Amendment proposed to get rid of the 3rd statement from the bottom.
We shouldn't value one service over the other.
a) Lexington is affluent. People should get out to help the needy.
b) We shouldn't define what these "comfort zones" are.
c) The statement in the resolution would prevent things like
Lexplorations from being a service.
d) We can insert "solely" and change the sentence, but we shouldn't
remove this part.
e) Amendment passes 18 to 17.
10) Amendment proposed to strike statements 4,5,6,7. We should grant
the committee the intellectual freedom to determine these things.
While those are valid concerns, this allows more flexibility.
a) Most valuable part should be what Senate should determine.
b) Senator Weiser dissents.
