VII. Community Service

1) Continued discussion of amendment to strike statements 4-7 from the

resolution.

a) Why do we want to get rid of it? Committee that is created should

decide how to proceed with the issues.

b) We shouldn't bring up issues of morality into policy initiatives.

c) Inclusion of the mission statement would be a good idea.

d) Senator Colarusso was not against those statements. He just felt

they limited the flexibility of the new committee that will be formed.

e) We shouldn't dictate morality.

f) The statements 4-7 don't come close to providing a policy

mandate. We should get out as many ideas as we possibly can.

g) We should many alter only statement 4 because it uses superlatives.

h) Let us remind you that we don't know who this committee would be.

Maybe they will be able to formulate a good community service

definition or maybe not.

i) These statements were included after talking to Dr. Jones. These

statements are directly from the Student Handbook and they are in

contradiction with the current policies.

j) We should work with statement #4.

k) Senate will be in close contact with this new committee that is formed.

l) #12 is on point. The other statements should be struck.

m) Amendment fails.

2) Motion to strike statement 4 containing the Newman quote. It is too

strongly worded.

a) Amendment passes.

3) Motion to amend the bottom statement on the front page to strike

everything after "many students" and insert "make efforts to fulfill

their community service obligations by bending the rules and in the

process violating the spirit of our school's community service

requirements."

a) Amendment passes.

4) Motion to insert a new #4 in the resolution on the back page. It

will read "Community service committee will in addition to the

above-named senators, include members from the LHS community up to two

less than the number of senators to be appointed by the executive

committee."

a) We need to be specific. Senate is a majority.

b) Confusion about the last phrase "to be appointed by executive

committee" raised.

c) It will be two less than the numbers of senators.

List of Senators Absent from Senate meeting: *Denotes excused/notified absence.
