LEXINGTON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT-FACULTY SENATE

2005-2006

Moderator Peter Lubershane, Assistant Moderator Sam Kafrissen, Secretary Peter Kim

Minutes from Meeting: 12-7-05

I. Call to Order: Meeting is called to order at 7:50 by Moderator Lubershane

II. Approval of Minutes: Minute approved.

III. Approval of Agenda: Voting Methods Bill was taken off the agenda.

IV. Announcements: 1) Senate Day is coming up next week. We'll still meet in the media classroom.

V. Open Comments: 1) Supreme Court will rule on the constitutionality of Solomon amendment and on the issue of military recruiters on school campuses.

2) Those who have N'd out of Senate are Miake-Lye, Pathan, Kalsow-Ramos, Wilson, Richardson, Tall and Serrano.

3) We should find another AIM representative since Senator Wilson stopped coming.

VI. Committee Reports: 1) Community Service Committee will meet Thursday at 11:30.

2) Oversight met and will make sure that the Honor Code bill is enforced. It will be read on the first day on homeroom.

3) Policy met and saw the new voting system that will be in place. Voting Methods bill is being revised.

4) Social Action will meet Tuesday after school instead of before school from now on.

5) Climate met last week after school. We're thinking of sending the money raised from talent show to the school systems in New Orleans area.

6) Elections committee will meet after school on Friday the 9th in room 520. We'll be hearing the appeals from Senators who have missed many meetings.

7) Communications met and discussed the Senate Day.

8) Executive committee met and wrote the 13 point summary about teacher absences and substitutes.

VII. New Business 1) Senator Sewell has found last year's substitute survey. Why are we doing it all over again?

2) There are 5 areas that are outside of Senate's jurisdiction. Those are outlined in the Constitution. 1991 and 1994 are the years when bills were passed about cancelled classes.

3) Motion to adjourn fails.

4) Why do we have condoms in the guidance offices?

5) It is something sponsored by GSA to promote safe sex. Kids are embarrassed to purchase condoms at CVS. No sex is obviously the safest choice.

6) Are there any signs up for Senate Day?

7) 13 points about substitute bill is distributed.

8) There is a Senate bill supporting condoms in the guidance area. Also, argument lawyers used to get to Supreme court on the issue of military recruiters on campus is ingenious.

9) All of us can talk to people and encourage them to come to Senate Day. Faculty can do so in homerooms.

10) Senator Colarusso likes hats as opposed to sashes.

11) Senate Day is when Senate really encourages people to come to Senate. We have food and it's a very jovial day.

12) Senator Metzger-Traber likes sashes. Togas would be nice, but not bedsheets.

13) Motion to postpone Senate Day to the 2nd week of January.

a) There's a Senate Bill that mandates that the Senate Day be in December.

b) Motion withdrawn.

14) The administration didn't seem to believe us last year when we presented our case about substitutes. We need a stronger case.

15) Moderator Lubershane reads the survey and says that majority of kids thought that substitutes didn't know the material.

16) We need to write down stuff and send more concrete stuff to the administration.

17) the Junior Substitute Bill of 10/94 outlines the procedures clearly. Administration should follow it more.

18) Senator Fiveash has 2 pages of anecdotal stuff from the teachers. Also, the Junior Substitutes bill was created because the Senior Substitutes bill worked out fine.

19) We need to inform Dr. Jones.

20) (1994 bill was read.) Teachers have to submit lesson plans to department heads. The intent behind that bill was so that teachers would have the discretion.

21) We need to do a survey of a bigger audience. We can even include teachers.

22) Senator Girondel asks Oversight to forward all the data and anecdotes to the administration.

23) The executive committee can compile this information.

24) It seems like Dr. Jones used out bills to add this other "layer".

25) We should invite an administrator to come to Senate and speak to us so that we don't have to keep guessing.
