I. Call to Order

Meeting is called to order at 7:52 by Moderator Skier

II. Approval of Minutes

Motion Approved Motion by Chair to approve Minutes of last meeting

III. Approval of Agenda

Motion Approved Motion by Chair to approve Agenda

IV. Announcements

a. Welcome to Senate Day!

b. If you signed up to man the senate table, show up

c. Why was there no HR announcement for Senate Day?

V. Committee Reports

Ad-Hoc 1. Has finished work and should be dissolved

Policy 1. Discussed No Child Left Behind Act and the presence

of Military Recruiters on the LHS campus

Communications1. Put finishing touches on Senate Day planning

2. Working on forming the First Class Committee

Oversight 1. Not able to get much done due to poor attendance

Social Action 1. Dealt with some heavy-duty Community service issues

Climate 1. Planning for racism and tolerance forum in March

Executive 1. Met with Dr. Jones and discussed the First Class Bill,

which he is intending to sign

VI. Open Comments

a. Senator Kafrissen points out that it is the anniversary

of John Lennon's death and encourages everyone to

persuade Mr. Zigatella to restore the Lennon mural

b. Senator Lubershane agrees with Secretary Smith that

"Garden State" was indeed a good movie

c. Senator David points out that there will be a meeting

held to discuss the mistreatment of the Foreign Lang.

Department; a petition will be circulating

d. Senator Girondel points out to Social Action that boys

lacrosse players are receiving community service hours

for selling things to raise money for the team

e. Senator Colarusso states that his previous open

comments about eclipses were not silly

f. Senator Williams reads a memo saying that if students

are allowed to smoke on campus, then they should be

provided with ashtrays

g. Chris Lee asks whether the GPA bill will be discussed

h. Senator Harper asks the senate to help clean up the food

VII. Discussion of Senate's Future

a. The senate will be taken over by monkeys in the future

b. Why was the Weighted GPA passed?; The weighted

GPA serves no purpose but to inflate honors students'

egos and to demean Level I students' efforts

c. College Admission is not affected by Weighted GPA

d. Won't getting rid of the Weighted GPA make honors

classes less attractive?; Yes but the senate wants

students to take honors classes because they are

passionate about the subject

e. Why we would even want a Weighted GPA

when there is no class ranking nor valedictorian?

f. The senate is applauded for passing this bill because

it puts the focus where it should be and benefits the

entire community, not just one group of students

g. The senate must anticipate the greater community's

arguments and protests about college admission

h. How long has LHS had a weighted GPA?; For about

30 years, since class ranking was gotten rid of

i. Possible bill circulating that would require the Cafeteria

to offer healthier lunch options to students and teachers

j. Policy Committee is discussing the extent to

which the senate could take a community-supported

action to publicly protest the No Child Left Behind Act

and the Army's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy

k. Dr. Jones states that all military recruiters at LHS have

been formally invited

l. When the Boy Scouts went public with their policy

excluding gays, some schools uninvited Scout visitors

m. Is there anything that the U.S. government can do

for retribution?

VIII. Discussion of Senate's Five Open Seats

Motion Motion by Senator Buttaro to give GSA a seat on Senate

Vote: Motion Passes

a. What defines an underrepresented group?

Motion Motion by Senator Williams to give SLUDGE a seat

Vote: Motion Passes

b. What is SLUDGE?; it is an LHS club that promotes

causes that benefit many different groups of people
