Announcements

Girondel: I believe that we have to nominate a Senator to be on the School Council.

Vachani:  I was nominated last year [to be the Senate representative to School Council].  I will begin to give reports during the announcements when School Council begins to meet.

Dhanani:  Welcome to the first Senate of the 2002-2003 school year.  We do have Senate mailboxes ready.

Petition by the GSA for a Senate Seat

Anna Vogelzang:  The Gay/Straigth Alliance (GSA) is a confidential group.  There are many students who have not yet come out because it would be dangerous for them.  If a student is not yet out, he or she might not be able to voice his or her true opinion.  As the Senator representing the GSA, I would be on the Social Action Committee.

[Anna Vogelzang reads the GSA's Proposal]

Williams:  Are any of the eight seats held?

Dhanani: No, last year the only group to hold a seat [held open for the representation of under-represented parts of the student body] was the GSA.

Williams: But are any other groups represented?

Dhanani:  No; however, every year we send out notices to any group that might potentially take an open seat.

[Motion to call the question]

[Question is called]

[Question passes]

Meeting in Committees

Dhanani:  Your committee assignments are in your folders, and are also written on your folders.  I request that each committee set a date for further meetings, and maybe even elect a chair.  There are specific issues with which I would like some committees to deal; I will get this business to those committees soon.
