Informal CRUD Discussion
Ris: We've decided to put the Thursday time schedule on a Tuesday. X block will be at the end of the day on the 24th. It's going to be shorter and it's going to be on a different day. We are also going to try cones.
Bogart: We have to try and find 1600 ice cream cones because our food service does not carry them. Also, we'd have to go back to scooping the ice cream. Also, my impression is that teacher's support for CRUD is less than 50%. I don't think there is a real push for students to clean up. I just think if the whole school can't get behind it, then it's a slap in the face to the people who organize it.
Kafrissen: Why don't Senators scoop the ice cream? What block are we talking about for CRUD?
Ris: E Block.
S. Girondel: Where are you getting cones?
Ris: I'll talk to Mr. Lanoue, or I can drive to Costco.
S. Girondel: What's wrong with going to Costco?
Ris: Other members of the Climate Committee responded rather unfavorably.
Burson: What if we do something not ice cream?
Yasaitis: I thought in past years Scoops might have donated ice cream.
Ris: Steve's and the Lexington Creamery did.
Bogart: In past years, Mr. Lanoue has found money.
David: As a teacher, I have a hard time getting students to do what I tell them in the classroom. It's even harder to tell them to pick up trash outside, where kids scatter.
Farrar: I think CRUD is a wonderful thing to teach kids civic duty by example. I count CRUD as class participation. There is some resistance, but in the end they're pretty happy about it.
Hemond: I suggest perhaps substituting cones with Snickers ice cream bars.
Gilbert: It seems that the reward is more important than the actually service. Personally, I think we should just can the reward.
Bogart: The biggest problem is that kids come out of cafeterias with ice cream while others are still cleaning up. The faculty needs to get behind CRUD and just do it. I think it has be either or.
S. Girondel: I agree with Senator Farrar. I think it's the responsibility of both students and teachers. It's disturbing that teachers aren't supportive. Also, the eating before cleaning's over can be prevented by not serving ice cream until the end of the service.
David: We have a list of new teachers that we can contact to get behind CRUD.
Moon: I do not agree about giving extra credit for participation in CRUD. It is something you do because you are proud of your school.
Gilbert: Perhaps we can have classes return to their rooms and get served there.
Fiveash: What is the problem with faculty scooping the ice cream?
David: Ice cream is very hard.
Fiveash: I do think that some teachers are uncomfortable about students outside the classroom setting. We need to speak to issues that address this. We need educate rather than take things away from them. That takes time.
S. Girondel: I agree with Senator Fiveash. It's been distressing to see the cups everywhere. The faculty should set a good example and be more enthusiastic. I think teachers should take initiative.
Fried: If teachers aren't supporting us, we won't be enthusiastic. Why is ice cream such a big deal?
Kafrissen: I think we have to deal with criticism and we have to accept and confront it. I think the problem is that there isn't much build up to CRUD. It just sort of appears. It's unfortunate, but it's reality. We should try to build up a more positive attitude towards CRUD.
Bogart: It's not too late to cancel the food order.
Kessler: This discussion is indicative of school wide cynicism. It disturbs me that teachers are cynical about their colleagues. I really believe that most teachers do care about this school. It seems that there's a fragmentation in the faculty. Students won't feel a connection to the school if teachers don't connect with each other.
