Introduction
The 2009 – 2010 School Improvement Plan has been developed in consultation with the High School Leadership Team, the High School Faculty, and the Lexington High School Council. In addition, my long-range thinking has been strengthened and focused by more than 300 teachers, parents, and students who allowed me to interview them about their concerns about life and learning at Lexington High School. My sincere thanks for your frankness and the generous gift of your time.
Members of the LHS School Council for 2009-2010 are: LHS faculty members Marshall Dury, Rina Farber Mazor, Walter Richardson, and Dave Wininger; parents Ellen Hilsinger, Jules Pieri, Bob Ruxin, Jill Smilow, and Jeri Zeder; community member Jean Cole; and students Rami Benayad-Cherif, Kiki Katsarakes, and Justin Reynolds.
As my predecessor, Dr. Michael Jones, wrote in his introduction to the 2008-2009 School Improvement Plan, “Every major initiative of the year should serve to enhance collaboration for the purpose of learning. And nearly every initiative will require a multi-year implementation period.”
Continuing this year as schoolwide issues to be addressed are: the need to improve teacher collaboration in order to promote the consistency, quality, and effectiveness of instruction and assessment; the need to utilize more effectively the potential of electronic communications media in communicating academic information with students at home; the need to reinforce and enact the social and civic expectations of the school; the need to address the perceived decline in the quality of educational engagement among seniors; and the need to investigate and address sources of unhealthy student stress.
